Aided by two forfeits, Dexter High School's tennis team recorded its first win of the season, 5-4, Monday at home over the Charleston Bluejays.
With only five varsity players, Charleston was unable to field one doubles team and was short one singles player. Of the matches played, Charleston won four of the seven matches played, but the two forfeits, Dexter took he match, 5-4.
"We should have won without the forfeits," Dexter coach Dennis Keith said. "Mentally we are losing our matches. I know they are young, but they are going to have to play the entire match. We have to work on this part of the game."
Dexter got singles' wins from Dusty Potter and Berry Burge, while Potter teamed up with Patrick Turpin for the lone doubles' win for the Bearcats.
Dexter's Ryan Windham lost of tough singles match, 9-8, in a tiebreaker (8-6). The Dexter sophomore was up 6-2 early in his match against Nathaniel Burton.
No junior varsity matches were played.
The win evens the Bearcats' record at 1-1 on the year.
The team will next be in action Saturday at a tournament in Farmington.
