Tyler Scott's two-out single with the bases loaded plated three runs and Eric Windham picked up his second win of the season on the mound as the Dexter Bearcats defeated the Kelly Hawks, 4-1, at home Wednesday in SEMO Conference baseball action.
Windham and Kelly pitcher Craig Irvin were locked in a pitcher's duel through four innings before Ethan Lee's RBI single in the fifth broke the scoreless battle and pushed the Hawks a head 1-0.
Windham and Dexter's defense limited the damage to a single tally in the frame and the Bearcats quickly responded in the home half of the fifth.
Catcher Ben Mills led off with a single, and one out and two walks later, the 'Cats loaded the bases. Windham popped out to first to set the stage for Scott's single to right that ws off the glove of a diving Lee. The runners were off with contact on th eplay and before the Hawks could track down the ball, three Bearcats cross the plate.
Dexter tacked on an insurance run in the sixth when Mills coaxed a one-out walk, moved to second on a single by Mason Noe and scored with two outs on a single by first baseman Matt Banken. Banken was caught in a run down between first and second to end the inning.
"Both pitchers did a good job," Dexter coach Brian Becker said after the game. "We got the ball in the air to much (hitting fly balls) and they didn't have to make any tough plays expect for the hit in the fifth. We had a tough time stringing hits together and that's a credit to their pitchers."
Caleb Miller worked the seventh in relief of Windham and picked up the save after two Hawks reached base.
Windham worked six innings and allowed five hits and one run. The right-hander recorded eight strikeouts and gave up five walks to improve his record to 2-0 on the year.
Miller contributed two singles in Dexter's seven hit attack, while Scott's 3-RBI effort led in that department. Mills scored twice and had a stolen base.
Dexter's offensive attack was aid by seven walks issued by Kelly pitchers.
The win improved Dexter's record to 2-0 on the season while Kelly remained winless at 0-3.
The Bearcats will next be in action Friday at home when they will host Oran in a 4 p. m. game at the East City Park ball field.
Notes: Dexter was without the services of starting centerfielder David Hessling who is out with a sprained ankle. The senior's status is day-to-day. There have been some changes to the Bearcats schedule, due in part to some early season postponements due to inclement weather. Road games missed against Perryville and Kennett earlier this season have been rescheduled. The Kennett game will be made up April 1, while the Perryville game will be played April 19. Also, the Scott City game originally scheduled for April 3 has been moved to May 8.

Listen to the Becker boy and you can win! Go Cats!
