SCAA coaches announce year end hoops awards

Thursday, March 27, 2008
BLOOMFIELD -- Bell City's Nick Niemczyk repeated as Player of the Year and the Cubs placed four players on the first team as the coaches announced their SCAA year end basketball awards.

Niemczyk led the Cubs to a undefeated regular season in SCAA play as well as the conference's annual tournament championship.

Joining Niemczyk on the first team were teammates Phillip Gross, Ethan Watkins and Marty Dames. Dames was also tabbed as the conference's stopper, or Defensive Player of the Year.

These four players also helped their coach, Brain Brandtner, earn Coach of the Year honors.

Senior Kevin Hart was Dexter's lone representative on the first team, while teammate Bobby Rawson was selected for honorable mention honors.

Puxico and Advance were the only schools beside Bell City with more than one player on the squad. Seniors Matt Allison and David Crain represented Puxico, while juniors David VanGennip and Jacob Bond were selected from the Advance Hornets.

Twelve players were selected to the first team. There was no second team, only honorable mention candidates.

Thank you. I thought the same thing. In a team when it is hard to even find 5-10 in the SCAA who stand out, we have 24 players honored. Give me a break. Is it so that there are 24 sets of parents happy? Make it what it should be.... an AWARD. 5 first team...the best. 5 second team...almost the best, but sorry. and 5 hon. mention. I second the congratulations and I am sure all the players named had moments where they shined. But there aren't 15 players in the entire SEMO area worhty of real honors, much less SCAA alone.

Congratulations to the All-Conference team; but, I still can't understand why we ever got away from naming a 5-man 1st team, a 5-man 2nd team, and honorable mention. After all, basketball is played with 5 players. I feel naming more diminishes the honor.
