ASU TOURNAMENT
Saturday
JONESBORO, ARK., -- Dexter won the Black Division of the ASU Tournament while Bernie earned the consolation title in the Scarlet Division Saturday at Jonesboro, Ark.
"I couldn't be prouder of the way the girls played," Dexter coach Kris Vandeven stated after the tournament. " Our goal was to start out on fire and keep the level of intensity up through the last game. We did just that. We played some tough competition. We won some and lost some, but we hung in there until the end."
Dexter opened the tournament's pool play with a loss to Houston (25-26, 25-20), then tied Crowley Ridge Academy in Paragould, Ark., (25-17, 24-26) then split two sets with Cabot, Ark., (25-20, 15-25).
In first round play, Dexter defeated Bryant (25-19, 25-20) before beating Cabot (18-25, 25-18, 15-8). In the Black Division title game, Dexter defeated Little Rock Christian Academy, 18-25, 25-21, 15-10.
Bernie's play at the tournament was much like Dexter's, up and down.
"We played some good games and some bad games," Bernie coach Jeff Rodgers stated. "We need to be more consistent, but we still went 4-2 on the day, although all of us thought we should have won this division of the tournament.
" Sami Palmer did a good job distributing the ball and she's got great court awareness," Rodgers continued. "Kristin Eaves continues to hit well, but our biggest improvement came from sophomore middle blocker Bailey Martin. Bailey's struggled in some areas early in the season, but the last eight games she has made a lot of progress. She had 22 kills Saturday with only 2 errors. That has given us a boost and helped us win six out of our last eight games."
In pool play, Bernie defeated Bay, Ark., 25-16-25-13, then Cedar Ridge, Ark., 25-3, 25-8, before losing to West Memphis, Ark., 25-18, 27-25.
In bracket action, Bernie lost to Mountain Home, Ark., 18-25, 25-21, 15-8. The Lady Mules then turned around and Holcomb, 25-21, 19-25, 15-10. Then, in a rematch with West Memphis, in consolation championship, Bernie posted a 25-21, 25-19, victory.
Eaves finished the tournament with 53 kills, followed by Martin and Krista Armbruster, each with 22.
Sarah Deason led the team in digs with 82, followed by Sami Palmer with 48. Palmer had a team-best 90 assists for the tournament.
Bernie will be in action again tonight when they will travel to Malden for a clash with the Lady Green Wave. Jayvee play is scheduled to start at 6 p. m. with varsity action to follow.

Not to take away anything from Dexter, but they did not win the Black Division Championship (that went to Scott City) Dexter won the Silver Bracket of the Black Division. Those things are very confusing! Dexter is a very good team.
