There were two things to celebrate after Dexter's game with Caruthersville Thursday night.

One was a win by the Lady Bearcats. The second was the long awaited opening of the new Bearcat Event Center.

Both were a big success.

The Lady Bearcats recorded a runaway 101-11 win to improve their season record at 7-5, while approximately 500 fans showed up to watch their home team and celebrate the opening of a new sporting venue for the community of Dexter and the school system.

"It was definitely a special night," Dexter coach Chad Allen said after the game. "We had a good fan base, good fan support tonight, more than we've had all year at home. I know a lot of it is probably just wanting to come and check out the event center. It's definitely a great place to play, one of the best in Southeast Missouri now, and I know our fan base is excited about it. I know tomorrow night with the boys playing against Bernie, I'm sure it will be packed out.'

Freshman Brittany Harris scored the first varsity points in the BEC and sophomore Lauren Ward knocked down the first 3-pointer on the center court of the new facility as Dexter jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead and never looked back, owning a commanding 41-4 first quarter advantage.

Harris would finish with a game-high 25 points, while seniors Abbie Warren and Kaitlyn Phillips each dropped in 16. Ward finished with two treys on the night and 14 points for the game.

"Over the break we wanted to work on our defense," Allen noted. "I thought we've struggled at the beginning of the year defensively and we've really worked hard over the break. I thought that first quarter we really got after it defensively and did real well.

"But you know, you have to sort of back off with a team like this and we just went to a regular 2-3 zone," he added. " In the second half we went to a zone and just packed it in there. We weren't trying to run up the score, but sometime things like this just happen."

All 12 players on the Dexter roster began rotating into the game by the second quarter. The Lady 'Cats led 69-7 at the half, 87-9 after three quarters and Phillips' two free throws with the mercy clock running and about 90 seconds remaining broke the century mark and set the final score.

"All of our subs got a lot of points," Allen added. "I know Sarah Langley had eight points tonight and I believe it was her grandpa that played in the first game at the (old) high school gym and here his granddaughter is getting to play for the first time in the events center so you know it's pretty special to them and Sarah had a great game with eight points and it was definitely a special night."

Two hours before the game a large crowd including school officials, school board members, community leaders and sports fans gathered at the new facility for a ribbon cutting ceremony that ushered in a new era for sports in Dexter.

The Lady Bearcats will be back in action Monday when they travel to Naylor, and again on Thursday at Portageville.

Note: The opening of the new Bearcat Event Center had been postponed twice... Weather forced the original Jan.7 date to be pushed back, and the tragic death of a Kennett student led to a postponement on Jan. 11.

Congratulations on the great show of sportsmanship by Dexter! You are not content with a good victory, but have to insult the other team. You opened your new facilty with your usual lack of class.

I 100% agree fan.hoops. Once again a show of unbelievable lack of class. But hey, the coach did back off and have the team play a 2-3 zone. Wasn't that nice. And the best quote is, "but sometimes things like this just happen." You have to be kidding me. Absolutely no excuse for this.

Coach allen should know better after his years in bloomfield

-- Posted by captainkirk on Fri, Jan 15, 2010, at 12:38 PM

I wasn't there, but are you telling him to just have his girls quit playing.

-- Posted by Dowdyball on Fri, Jan 15, 2010, at 3:32 PM

Totally classless!!

-- Posted by shoe lady on Fri, Jan 15, 2010, at 3:48 PM

You all have absolutely no idea what you are talking about. If you would come watch a game and see how much class Coach Allen and the girls have, you wouldn't make such idiotic remarks. Good Day.

-- Posted by Dexter Native on Fri, Jan 15, 2010, at 4:14 PM

Girls execute the coaching staff's gameplan. Not the girls' fault.

Not looking for an argument Dexter Native. Just an explanation that makes sense. How do you see a 90 point win as classy?

-- Posted by greer958 on Fri, Jan 15, 2010, at 4:35 PM

We do know what were talking about Dexter Native and I don't have to sit in the stands and watch such a ridiculous display of sportsmanship to make my comments. This same thing happened last year and I responded the same way. It is absolutely WRONG. If you can come up with one good example for beating a team by 90 points in HIGH SCHOOL, then I might retract my statements. I'll be waiting.

Way to go Dexter LBB! I'm proud to be a fan! Seems to be a lot of complainers around who like to take jabs at Dexter for one thing or another. I think it's great that this group of girls is doing so well with all of the pressure to follow up last year's outstanding, record breaking season. This year's team is young and has great potential to break even more records in the years to come. For those of you who insist on putting down a hard working bunch of athletes, quit the bellyaching about busting the clock. You can't call a varsity game at halftime because of a lopsided score.

-- Posted by DexterFan on Fri, Jan 15, 2010, at 10:20 PM

Well said, DexterFan. Most of these Dexter girls are freshman and sophomores. As a coach, you pull off the press (which he did) then run half court offense. (Which they did). Unless you hold the ball at half court you can't help from scoring. Would you have had the Dexter girls just hold the ball? Maybe they just shouldn't play the game. Maybe Dexter shouldn't play them, but just a few years ago, C'ville put a quality team on the floor. Sometimes these type of games happen in high school sports. Dexter got beat pretty badly our first game of the season, but we worked hard and used those mistakes to get better. Nuff said.

-- Posted by Dexter Native on Fri, Jan 15, 2010, at 10:37 PM

All of the pressure? What pressure would that be?...An average to below average program until Coach Miller took over a few years ago. Then it continued through last year with their first ever trip to the state finals....So again, I ask. What pressure are you talking about?

And once again, for those who don't read very well, I am not faulting the players. I am faulting the coach. Please give me ONE good reason to beat a team by 90 points. I'm still waiting.

-- Posted by Coconut Telegraph on Fri, Jan 15, 2010, at 10:40 PM

I'm counting eleven Dexter players in the box score. Did players 7 through 11 play the most minutes? I'm just curious. My guess is no.

-- Posted by Coconut Telegraph on Fri, Jan 15, 2010, at 10:43 PM

Read above post for your reason. :)

-- Posted by Dexter Native on Fri, Jan 15, 2010, at 10:44 PM

Your guess would be wrong. if you would have been at the game or listened on the radio, you would know. Get all the facts before you throw stones.

-- Posted by Dexter Native on Fri, Jan 15, 2010, at 10:45 PM

I'm not finding a reason in the above post, so please enlighten me.

And you're telling me that the 7 through 11 players played the most minutes? Is that correct?

-- Posted by Coconut Telegraph on Fri, Jan 15, 2010, at 10:51 PM

Utterly classless, didn't expect this from Coach Allen.

-- Posted by changedname on Sat, Jan 16, 2010, at 4:17 PM

Coco - layoff here. I know you had mad game back in the day, but what do you really expect someone to do in this situation...run four corners per Dean Smith? The kids need PT and if the other team can't put it in the bucket, then tough. Play the game the best you can and the score is what it is. Don't hate the coach, hate the game.

-- Posted by layne staley on Sun, Jan 17, 2010, at 8:21 PM

Looking at the boxscore, it doesn't look as bad as the score. They only scored 32 points in the second half. Eleven girls scored, don't know how many played.

All a coach can do is sub. It would be wrong to put substitutes in the game and ask them to not play hard. They deserve to play and they are likely trying to earn more playing time.

-- Posted by bobby62914 on Sun, Jan 17, 2010, at 8:45 PM

Nice drop in with the four corners Layne. You know I love Coach Smith. But this isn't Lou Dew ball and they shouldn't be running the score up. If I was C'ville and I was playing with the Buschy Wuschy ball, I would take it and go home.

Obviously, some of you weren't at the game - and don't know all of the facts.

The girls team had not played a game since December 23rd (3 weeks)- they were sick and tired of practicing. Sadly, they were unable to play Kennett (a MUCH better team) on the 11th due to the tragic loss of a student. The energy that the girls came out with in the first quarter against Caruthersville was outstanding - we came out and pressed and played our aggressive 2-3 matchup zone defense - causing several turnovers. The coaches called off the press after the first quarter, and started substituting heavily in the second quarter.

In the third quarter, the coaches had the girls play a very non-aggressive, packed-in 2-3 zone, letting the Caruthersville guards throw the ball freely around the perimeter of the zone - where they would either throw it away, or dribble it off of their foot, or shoot and miss. We would then come down, pass and dribble the ball around the perimeter of their defense (TRYING to run time off the clock - check the box score by quarters) - but we would always have a girl come open under the basket for a lay-up. Now, being that our starters were sitting on the bench, are you going to tell a girl that gets little or no playing time that they are not to shoot the basketball?

I hate to say anything bad about the Caruthersville team, but the facts are they were PITIFUL and quit playing after the first quarter of the game. On Jan 6th, they lost 91-20 against Scott City (I tried to find more scores, but couldn't) so this wasn't their first, nor will it be their last, lop-sided loss.

Honestly, I wish we would've not played them at all - we have three very tough road games coming up this week, and we'll have to play our best to win - we needed our first game back from the lay-off to be competitive - and not a "cupcake".

Holy crap, Batman....I wasn't there, didn't see the game, but I don't have to, to know this...if a team doesn't want to be humiliated by being beaten so badly, then they should play a better game. The way you people talk, the Vikings should have backed off on the Cowboys so they wouldn't have been so humiliated...welcome to the real world folks...if you can't stand the heat get out of the kitchen.

-- Posted by BarbaraNTexas on Wed, Jan 20, 2010, at 2:09 PM

Texas Barb, I aspect better from you. You are trying to compare high school sports with professional. You absolutely cannot do that, it's like night and day...Immature teenagers compared to highly paid adults, not even close.

-- Posted by Coconut Telegraph on Wed, Jan 20, 2010, at 11:52 PM

No, I wasn't...you all have already agreed that it was not the players who were at fault, so it must have been one or more adults who were. If that is the case, then let me be more specific...if the if the coach doesn't want to be humiliated by a huge loss, then he should become a better coach...or back away and let someone come in who is better. What I'm saying is that we have let our society become such that we cry abuse when someone's self esteem might be injured because they don't perform at as high a level as someone else does. Well isn't that what competition and game play is all about? As teenagers coming up in the world, they should be seeing what the real world is all about outside their currently somewhat protected environment and be taught how to roll with the punches and learn from their own mistakes and more importantly own the responsibility of doing so.

-- Posted by BarbaraNTexas on Thu, Jan 21, 2010, at 7:46 AM

Barb, I agree with everything you just said. However, there is a big difference between. teenagers and their maturity and adults. There is also a big difference in beating teams by 30 or 40, than beating teams by 90 or 100. Or trying to jack up a three at the buzzer to score a 100 when you're winning by 80....I was coached old school and I played that way, and I still believe in doing it that way, especially discipline. And this nation is definitely becoming sissified by all of the PC bullsh*t. But on this particular topic I will not budge.

It's been fun but Coconut Telegraph has had enough of the DS blogs. I'm out.

-- Posted by Coconut Telegraph on Thu, Jan 21, 2010, at 7:57 AM

And another point...what is the reaction from the Caruthersville side? The coach, players, fans, families...what are they saying about their loss? Are they taking it gracefully as they should or are they ranting and raving, calling foul? Same question for the Dexter team and coach...Did THEY win gracefully or are they rubbing it in the other team's face? Learning how to win and lose with grace is another lesson to be learned here.

Just asking those questions, because all I have to go by are the comments all of you have posted and I'm curious.

-- Posted by BarbaraNTexas on Thu, Jan 21, 2010, at 8:10 AM

Coco, I'm sorry you feel that way, and I'm also sorry if my stepping on your toes is the reason, but I was just trying to get you all to look at the bigger picture. At the same time, your leaving sort of proves my point. Hope you change your mind and come back.
